HWY 50 Challenge
THE NEVADA HIGHWAY 50 SURVIVAL CHALLENGE: THE LONELIEST ROAD IN AMERICA
In July 1986, Life magazine described Nevada’s Highway 50 from Ely to Fernley as the “Loneliest Road in America.” Life said there were no attractions or points of interest along the 287-mile stretch of road and recommended that drivers have “survival skills” to travel the route.
But Nevadans knew better. They knew that Highway 50 was wide and open — but also one of the state’s most scenic and historic corridors. They knew it retraced the route of the Pony Express and Overland Stagecoach trails and passed through some of the best-preserved 19th century mining towns in the state. They also knew it was filled with recreational opportunities ranging from riding off-road vehicles on the slopes of Sand Mountain to mountain biking on trails around Austin. And they knew it really wasn’t so lonely.
The Highway 50 Survival Guide is a challenge to travelers to learn for themselves about America’s Loneliest Road. Take the trip across Nevada’s heartland, stop in any five of the seven largest towns (Austin, Dayton, Eureka, Ely, Fallon, Fernley, and Baker) to get your Official Highway 50 Survival Guide validated and discover it for yourself. If you dare.

Virginia City
Step back in time!
Virginia City is one of only eight historic landmark districts in Nevada, forever holding a place of international importance with its incredibly rich history in pioneering engineering, arts and culture, and the famous 1859 Comstock Lode. It is a thriving community of historic attractions, local merchants, artists, musicians, writers, government, and proud residents. The culture and pride of Virginia City and Storey County runs deep.
Storey County, small but mighty, is home to small and large businesses, including the world-class Tahoe Reno Industrial Center, where forward-thinking international corporations have invested in progressive manufacturing, technology, and other industrial facilities. The development and success of TRI is our modern-day technology boom, infusing the county with new progress, revenue, investment, and expansion, drawing international interest. While it contrasts with our history in some ways, it also deeply compliments and adds to it as a meaningful chapter in our history and future.

Fort Churchill
Nevada State Historic Park
An integral part of the history of Nevada and the American West, Fort Churchill was built in 1860 to provide protection for early settlers and westbound emigrants and guard the Pony Express and telegraph lines. Today the ruins are preserved in a state of arrested decay within Fort Churchill State Historic Park, and visitors can walk designated trails to observe the ruins. The park also includes the renovated Buckland Station, an important way station in the 1800s for pioneer travelers on the Overland Route. Situated along the Carson River, the park is an idyllic place for camping, hiking, bird watching and canoeing.
Nevada’s first, largest and most elaborate military outpost was active from its establishment in July 1860, through an era rife with local and national conflict, and up to its abandonment in the fall of 1869. During this tumultuous yet significant decade in the history of Nevada and the American West, Fort Churchill helped to bring about a semblance of Federal control over a quickly developing and resource-rich area that lacked effective government control. The troops stationed at Fort Churchill protected California-bound emigrants, safeguarded the Pony Express and telegraph lines, fought battles and skirmishes with local Native Americans, protected area settlements, intervened in miner’s disputes and quelled any uprisings brought about by the Civil War. Grimes Point/Hidden Caves
Adventure at your fingertips!
Grimes Point is a field of basalt boulders that are covered with a glossy black patina, commonly called desert varnish. Many of the boulders are covered with pecked or carved rock art called petroglyphs. The antiquity of many of the petroglyphs can be evidenced by how varnish has completely repatinated the carved surfaces.
Visitors today can view examples of petroglyphs along a 1/4 mile, self-guided interpretive trail. The trail was originally constructed by the Youth Conservation Corps and named Nevada's first National Recreation Trail in 1978. Handicapped accessible restrooms and picnic facilities are available at this popular stop on U.S. Highway 50.
Contact the BLM Carson City District Office at (775) 885-6000 for more information or to arrange for a guided tour of the site for school or other large groups. Guided public tours are also available at nearby Hidden Cave on the second and fourth Saturday of each month.
Check out the Churchill County Museum in Fallon and the Nevada State Museum in Carson City for additional displays about prehistoric Nevada and Grimes Point and Hidden Cave. Please stay on the trail and help ensure this special place remains for future generations by respectfully viewing the petroglyphs. Take nothing but photographs. Please do not touch, chalk, create rubbings of the petroglyphs, or damage them in any way.
5)
Pyramid Lake
World-Class Fishing
A glimmering, high-desert jewel, Pyramid Lake is a sacred remnant of prehistoric Lake Lahontan, and has been part of the Nevada story for thousands of years. Home to the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe, this high-desert lake was named by explorer John C. Fremont for the pyramid-shaped limestone formation jutting out of the water along the eastern shoreline. Certain plants and animals can only be found here, like the cui–ui sucker fish. Pyramid Lake is also home to Anaho Island National Wildlife Refuge, which, in addition to being a protected habitat for thousands of migrating birds is also the largest breeding ground of the American White Pelican. Situated about 45 minutes north of Fernley, the lake offers plenty of surprises to first-time visitors, returning veterans, and everyone in between.
From some of the most legendary trophy fishing in the West to unmatched birdwatching, wildlife photography, off-roading, camping, and more, Pyramid Lake beckons the outdoorsman in all of us to experience this northwestern Nevada jewel.

BONUS! Cowboy Fast Draw
HOWDY!
Welcome to the Sport of Cowboy Fast Draw! The Cowboy Fast Draw Association, LLC is the largest organization devoted to the Sport of Fast Draw to ever exist. We have signed up over 3,000 members as of 2012. Our Motto is: Safety First, Fun Second and Competition Third. Not that our competitions aren’t important, we shoot hundreds of events a year for prize money, prizes and titles. It’s just that we place sportsmanship and fun above the competition itself, and place safety above all.
CFDA has about 70 affiliated clubs across North America and several countries, new clubs are forming constantly through CFDA’s “Club in the Works” program.
The Cowboy Fast Draw Association administrates the rules to the sport, sanctions contests, conducts a CFDA Range Officer Program, and maintains a Youth Safety Training Program. One of our primary goals is to educate as many people as possible in the safe and proper use of firearms. Because our sport can be conducted at almost any location due to the wax bullets that we use and the backstops our clubs construct, our events are held in many public venues. We consider ourselves ambassadors of the Cowboy Way and Gun Safety to the public who are spectators at our events.
